Override or supplement values in paths.d

I'd like to look at supporting multiple versions of the VTE in my application. Is there any way for an application to handle when loading a library fails and possibly supply an alternate path for the library?

I could probably make paths.d support multiple versions of the libraries.

Thanks Mike, I'm not in urgent need of this feature at the moment, but I was wondering if there was an existing capability for it for some future plans I have. When I need it I'll open a feature request on github for it.
